My power stretcher broke mid-job last Tuesday and I had to finish a 30-yard living room with just a knee kicker

The head snapped clean off the tube on the third pull against a seam, so I rigged it with a ratchet strap and a 2x4 to get through the last two rooms, has anyone else had to MacGyver a stretcher on site?

Last Tuesday I had a C-clamp and a car jack holding my old Roberts together after the weld cracked on the handle. Finished the last 15 feet of a dining room by pulling with the jack against the baseboard and hoping the drywall didn't crack. Felt like I was building a bomb instead of stretching carpet.

Man, "building a bomb instead of stretching carpet" is exactly it. I had a similar setup with an old power stretcher where the lever pin snapped off, so I was using a piece of rebar and a cinder block to get tension. Did a whole living room that way, sweating the whole time. The worst part was when I had to stop halfway through a stretch to adjust the rebar and the damn thing would just pop loose. Felt like every pull was a gamble, like the whole thing could just fly apart any second. You just get to a point where you're like "well, this is what I've got, guess I'm doing this the sketchy way." Totally get the "bomb" feeling.
