Tried foam back carpet over pad and it was a mistake
I did a job last month where the homeowner wanted foam back carpet directly on the subfloor. Saved a few bucks on pad but the carpet wore through in the hallway in 3 weeks. I told him that's why I always use separate pad. Has anyone else had a customer push back on using pad?

Some people actually prefer foam back carpet because it gives a firmer feel underfoot and less bounce, which is better for heavy furniture or wheelchairs. The real issue in that hallway was probably poor subfloor prep or a lower quality foam backing, not the concept itself. If you choose a dense, commercial grade foam back carpet and install it right, you can skip the pad without it falling apart in a month.

@the_kai nailed it, bad subfloor prep will kill any carpet setup.
