The $25 oil filter cutter that made me eat my words about cheap tools

I've been doing my own oil changes since I bought my 2005 Civic 8 years ago. Always figured those filter cutting tools were gimmicks for YouTubers. Last month I grabbed a cheap one from Harbor Freight just to see what was actually inside my filters after 5,000 mile intervals. Cut open the last one and found metal shavings stuck in the pleats. That was the moment I stopped trusting the "lifetime" filter claims. Now I cut every filter I pull off, and I've caught two more with debris before they became real problems. Anyone else actually check their filters or do you just toss them?
