Took me 3 tries to figure out I was tightening lug nuts in a star pattern wrong

I've been changing tires on my $800 Civic for like 2 years now, just going around in a circle. Saw a video on YouTube of some mechanic torquing wheels and he specifically said "star pattern not circle pattern." Realized I was just spinning them clockwise all these years, wondering why my rotors felt warped. Swear I've probably ruined a set of rotors doing it wrong. Anyone else ever catch themselves doing basic stuff backwards for way too long?

Three years of circle tightening here and my rotors still work fine.

Have you been checking the freeplay at all or just going by feel? For me it was mostly about getting the pads to bite evenly before the cable stretched too much. I had this habit of waiting until the lever pulled all the way to the bar before tightening, but once I started adjusting as soon as I felt a tiny bit of extra travel, the rotors stopped warping on me. Also switching to sintered pads made a difference, they wear down way slower than organic ones. Seems like the key is staying ahead of it before the cable gets too loose.
