That $400 Forester Timing Belt Job Is How You Buy A Warped Head, Not A Deal
Bought an 04 Forester in Nashville for $900 last spring and the seller swore the timing belt had been done at 150k, which I believed because he had a receipt from a shop that turned out to be a jiffy lube oil change. When the belt let go at 178k every single exhaust valve bent, and my cheap Subaru turned into a $1,600 head rebuild that I could have skipped by spending $60 on a belt and tensioner kit and checking it myself. How many of you have bought a car based on a repair receipt that turned out to be for a totally different service?

Lesson here is never trust paper, pull the cover and look at the belt yourself.
