Gave up my debit card for a cash envelope at the NC farmers market
Back in March I had to pick between using my debit card at the checkout line or walking to the ATM down the street to get cash for a $42 order of carrots and greens. I chose the ATM, and it took me 10 extra minutes, but I felt way more in control of what I bought. Now I always grab $60 before I go, and I only spend what's in the envelope, even if the peaches look amazing. Has anyone else hit a moment where cash made them slow down and skip a purchase?
I used to laugh at people doing the whole cash envelope thing. Figured it was just a gimmick for folks who couldn't track their spending. Then last month at the Piedmont market I had $40 in my pocket and these heirloom tomatoes were $8 a pint. Normally I'd grab three pints without thinking. Instead I picked one and a loaf of bread and walked away. That extra minute of counting bills made the price feel real. Now I get why you do it.
