My granddad's advice about cash was dead wrong for 2024

My granddad told me back in 2018 that if I just used cash for everything, I'd never get into trouble with debt. He was right about that part. But he didn't mention that my landlord in Nashville would charge me a $35 convenience fee every month for paying rent in cash at the office. Plus I lost a $50 bill somewhere between the grocery store and my car last spring. Has anyone else had old family advice backfire on them like this?

Okay but @leep33, you're missing the point. It's not about having a perfect system, it's about cash having zero safety net. Drop your wallet and someone can spend that cash before you even notice it's gone. Lose a card and you just freeze it. That landlord fee alone proves cash is becoming more trouble than it's worth. The world's just not built for it anymore.

Whoa hold on there. I gotta gently push back on one thing you said. That $50 bill you lost? That's not really a cash problem, that's a "you need a better system" problem (no offense). I've been using cash for years and I keep my bills organized in a money clip or a wallet with separate compartments. Losing a bill like that just means you weren't paying attention to where you put it. The landlord fee thing is totally valid though, that's a real downside of cash in 2024. But don't blame cash for your own absentmindedness, you know?
