Realized I was doing my cash envelopes all wrong after a trip to the hardware store
I've been using the envelope system for years, but I was just stuffing cash in them with no real plan. Last Tuesday at Ace Hardware, I needed a new shovel head that cost $42, but my 'tools' envelope only had $17 in it. I had to pull from my 'groceries' money and it messed up my whole week. It hit me that I wasn't actually budgeting, I was just moving cash around. How do you guys set your envelope amounts so you don't run short?

Honestly it's just cash in envelopes, not a heart surgery. Sometimes you gotta move money around, that's life. The whole point is having the cash there to move, right? Getting too strict with it seems like a fast track to stressing over every little thing. Maybe just having the envelopes is doing more than most people do anyway.
