Showerthought: the 3 days my bank went down taught me more about cash than a year of planning
My bank's app and ATMs were down from Tuesday morning till Thursday night this week, and I had $61 in my wallet to get through all of it. Turns out I could cover gas, groceries, and my kid's school lunch money just fine, but I got caught at the pharmacy with a $14 prescription and had to leave and come back. The weird part is I felt calmer than I expected, like the limit forced me to actually think about each purchase. What's the longest stretch you've gone with your bank or card not working, and did it change how much cash you keep on you?
Cash only feels calm because you had $61 and small problems. Try doing that with a mortgage payment, a car repair, and a Costco run in the same week and see how calm you feel. A three day outage is nothing, most of us would burn through our wallet money by Wednesday lunch. Keeping thousands in a drawer just so you can feel prepared is how people get robbed or lose track of it.
