The ATM fee that made me question my whole cash system

I ran into my old neighbor Dave at the gas station Tuesday and he asked why I still pay $4.50 in ATM fees every week instead of just using my debit card. I told him it keeps me honest, but he pointed out that's $234 a year I'm burning for no reason. He said the real discipline is tracking what you spend, not the plastic itself, and honestly that stung because I never added up the fees like that. I've been cash only for 6 years now and the envelope thing works for me, but he's got a point that the fees are the hidden cost nobody talks about. Anyone else ever run the numbers on their own cash habits and find they're paying a premium just for the lifestyle?
