The envelope system works until you forget to grab the right envelope on a Saturday morning after 5 weeks of discipline

I ended up $40 short at the checkout counter during a grocery run last month because I left my household envelope at home, and the lady behind me had to cover the difference since I refuse to carry a debit card.

oh man i feel this in my bones lol. i started keeping a spare $20 in my car's glove box just for those moments when my brain fails me on a saturday morning. also i'd suggest taking a photo of the cash in the envelope before you leave the house so you know exactly what you grabbed but that's maybe too extra for some people. the real trick is just accepting it'll happen sometimes and having a small backup plan instead of beating yourself up over it.

Ngl @olivia_morgan8 i used to think the photo thing was overkill but you actually make a solid point. ive lost count of how many times ive grabbed the wrong envelope or forgot i already spent part of it and then im short at the register. the backup $20 in the glove box is genius too tbh. i always felt like i had to be perfect with cash but youre right that its way easier to just have a safety net and move on lol.
