The gas station clerk who stopped taking cash in 2019 broke my routine
I used to go to the same Shell station on 3rd street for like 10 years. Always paid with cash, bought the same coffee and a pack of peanuts for $3.50 total. Then one day back in 2019 they put up a sign saying card only at the pump and inside too. The clerk told me the owner got tired of counting drawers and dealing with fake bills. It was a small thing but it messed me up for weeks. I had to find a new spot that took cash and the coffee wasn't even as good. That's when I realized how many places were ditching paper money without me paying attention. Has anyone else had a regular spot just go card only on you like that?

Wait, is this really that deep though? Like I get being annoyed when your routine gets messed up, but it took you weeks to get over a gas station not taking cash anymore? You probably spent more time and gas money driving to another spot for the same coffee and peanuts that probably weren't even that different. I feel like we all have those little things that bug us but calling it a "realization" about the whole cashless trend from one clerk's sign feels a bit dramatic. Not trying to be rude but maybe just carry a debit card and move on with your life.

Wait, @janaw11 did you actually try to use cash somewhere after being card-only for a while? I had the same issue when my go-to bodega switched last year, and what helped was just keeping a small emergency card in my glove box for the random no-cash spots. It's not about being dramatic its about having a backup so you dont waste your whole day running around over peanuts.
