Just read that most home cooks only use salt and pepper for seasoning
I was looking at a study from a cooking school about pantry staples and it said over 60% of people don't own more than those two basics. I found it in a food industry report my old sous chef sent me. Do you guys see this a lot with friends or family who cook at home?

Honestly that sounds about right for most people. They just want to make dinner, not run a restaurant. Salt and pepper gets the job done for a lot of basic meals anyway.

Wait, you don't have garlic powder? I use that on almost everything... it's the one thing I always have. Salt and pepper alone just seems so plain.

The study probably means they don't own whole spices. Most people have the dried stuff in jars, like garlic powder or chili flakes. Those are still seasonings beyond salt and pepper. It's more about not having a cabinet full of fancy whole peppercorns or special salts.
