My neighbor's 5 minute solar panel comment made me rethink my whole electric bill

She pointed at my roof during a July cookout and said 'you spend $180 a month on power, I spend $40, and my panels paid for themselves in 4 years,' so I spent last week calling three installers and now I'm just sitting here wondering why I never did the math before.

...and honestly that whole thing reminds me of my uncle who put panels up in 2019 and spent the first year just staring at his inverter like it was a TV. He'd text me pictures of the app showing 23 kilowatt hours and I'd be like cool Bob, anyway. But the real kicker is he got so obsessed with tracking usage that he started unplugging the toaster when he wasn't using it, and then his wife found him at midnight rearranging the fridge to "optimize airflow." They're still married but the panels took 6 years to pay off because he kept adding batteries and smart stuff. Tbh I think the math only works if you don't turn it into a hobby.

Get three quotes, check their math, and ask about the 30% tax credit before signing anything.
