Visited a solar farm in Iowa last week, wonder if giant scale is better than lots of small rooftop setups

The town I grew up in lost a 200-acre cornfield to a solar farm last year, and people were actually split on it. Some said it was better for the environment, but others pointed out the irony of taking prime farmland to save the planet. I guess it's like everything else these days where we try to solve one problem and accidentally create another. Rooftop solar on all the suburban houses around me would honestly make more sense since we've got so many empty roofs anyway. Plus you see those big solar farms and they just feel so wasteful with all that space when everyone's house is sitting right there doing nothing.

Rooftop solar is actually way better than it gets credit for lol. Those big solar farms take up tons of farmland that could be growing crops, and you lose a ton of power just from transmission lines running across the state. With rooftop setups, you're generating power right where it's used, so there's way less waste. Also helps with grid stability during peak times like hot summer days when everyone cranks their AC. The land use argument alone makes me lean toward rooftop being the smarter play long term.
