Talking to my regular at the bar about his coffee gear

He told me he stopped using his fancy gooseneck kettle for a month, just used his old cheap one. Said he couldn't taste a real difference in his pour over and felt dumb for spending so much. It hit different because I've been saving up for that same kettle for like six months. Has anyone else cut back on a piece of gear and been surprised?

Ever notice how we buy stuff for the story it tells about us, not what it actually does?

You know, it makes me wonder if the ritual of using the fancy gear is half the point. That careful pour from a gooseneck feels like a real coffee moment, even if the taste is the same. Maybe we're paying for that little bit of theater in our morning routine, and when that wears off, so does the magic. The trick is knowing if that daily show is worth the ticket price to you.

Ever try the kettle at a friend's place first?
