Update: watched a barista in Portland dump my shot because the beans were 9 days old
Stopped at a small shop near SE Division while visiting my sister a couple weeks ago, and the guy pulled my espresso, looked at it, and tossed it in the knock box before I could even say anything. He said the beans were roasted 9 days ago and they get flat after day 7, so he grabbed a fresher bag from the back and pulled again. I stood there kind of annoyed at first because who throws away a shot someone paid for, but then I tasted the second one and it was like a totally different drink, sweeter and not bitter at all. Now I'm that person checking roast dates on every bag at the store and turning down stuff sitting on the shelf for weeks. Does anyone here have a cutoff day where you just won't buy beans no matter the price?
