Comparing my college study routine with a trade cert program, the second one won easily

I left a 4-year business degree after 2 semesters and felt lost, so I tried a 6-month welding cert at a community college in Toledo. The difference was wild. In college, I sat through lectures and crammed for tests, but the cert program had me practicing joints every morning with a specific checklist. My instructor, Mike, told me "you'll learn more from fixing your own bad bead than from any textbook," and he was right. By week 8, I was passing bends on 3/8 plate that would've taken me a full term to figure out in a classroom. I'm not saying everyone should drop out, but for me, hands-on beat theory every single time. Has anyone else tried a trade program after leaving school and found the practical approach just made things click faster?

... and honestly I gotta push back on that. College forced you to sit with boring theory you hated, but that's kind of the point, you learn how to push through stuff that doesn't click right away. Welding cert gives you a fast win, sure, but it's a narrow skill, six months later you're still doing the same joint, just faster. The degree opens way more doors later even if it feels useless now. It's like comparing a sprint to a marathon, the sprint feels great but the marathon pays off when you're 35.
