Dropped out of college and learned to fix my own car after the shop quoted me $1,200

I was at a repair shop in Cleveland three months after leaving school. They told me my alternator needed replacing plus labor, and I just sat there realizing I had $200 in my account. So I walked out, watched a YouTube video in the parking lot, and bought a $60 alternator from AutoZone. Spent 4 hours in my girlfriend's driveway swapping it out with basic tools, and the car ran fine after that. Has anyone else here taught themselves something practical after dropping out that saved them a ton of cash?

Honestly, @the_wade is just trying to justify buying a whole new toolbox.

That alternator story hits close to home. I did the same thing with a starter on my old Honda - shop wanted $800, got the part for $80 and spent a Saturday wrestling with rusted bolts. Once you figure out you can fix most car stuff with YouTube and a basic socket set, it's hard to go back to paying those shop rates.
