Failed the same stats class twice before I figured out I was studying wrong the whole time
I dropped out of state school in my junior year after bombing intro stats for the second time, and the thing that finally clicked was watching a guy in the library use old exams instead of re-reading the book. I had been highlighting chapters for 3 hours a night like it was a novel, and my notes were basically just pretty colors. He asked me one question, what do you actually get tested on, and I didn't have an answer. That was 2 years ago and I still think about it whenever I catch myself re-reading something instead of just doing it. Anyone else have a moment like that where the fix was dumb simple and you felt like an idiot?
I always thought the trick was just putting in MORE hours, like the problem was I wasn't grinding hard enough. Then a friend showed me how he did practice problems with the book closed and only peeked when he was totally stuck, and it was a night and day difference for me. I had SO much pride in my color coded notes and honestly they were useless because I never tested myself with them. The shame of realizing I wasted a whole semester on pretty highlighting still gets me sometimes, but it beats staying stuck. Now I do one thing before any study session, I ask what could actually show up on the test. That one dumb question would've saved me months of spinning my wheels.
