My LCS guy said skip the variant covers and buy the reading copy, and he was right

I was at my comic shop in Cleveland two years ago and the owner Dave talked me out of dropping $40 on a foil variant of a book I actually wanted to read, saying the story inside was the same either way. I bought the regular cover for $5, read it twice, and later saw that same variant sitting unsold in his back issue bin for half price. So how do you all decide when a cover is worth the extra cash and when it's just a trap?
