Decided between a used precision workstation and building my own for a homelab

Had to pick between a used Dell Precision T5810 for $350 or piecing together something from scratch with new parts. Went with the Dell because it came with 64GB of ECC RAM already installed. Been running it for 3 months now as a Proxmox host and it handles everything I throw at it without a hiccup. Anyone else grab a retired workstation and find it way more stable than expected?

The T5810 is just one of those old workhorses that feels like it was built for a different era. It's funny how buying used tech that was originally meant for a corporate office often ends up being more reliable than anything new you'd piece together yourself.

Yeah same here. I grabbed a used Optiplex off eBay a couple years back and it's been way more solid than any custom build I've tried for the money.
