Had to pick between a thermal camera and a tone generator for a house wrap

Last Tuesday I had to trace a network drop that ran through a finished wall in a client's house in Austin. I chose the tone generator over my FLIR unit because I figured the wall studs would mess with heat readings. It took me 45 minutes of hunting with the probe before I realized the cable was behind a metal firebreak, which killed the tone. Has anyone else found thermal cameras better for finding cables in tricky spots, or is it just me?

My buddy Kyle burned 2 hours on a tone once, thermal found the drop in 10 minutes.
