Had to pick between cloud backup and local NAS for a client, went with the NAS
Last week I had a small law office client whose old external drive finally gave up. They needed file protection but their internet is spotty out in the suburbs near Austin, so cloud-only backups scared me. I went with a 2-bay Synology NAS instead, set it to mirror nightly, and added a USB copy for extra safety. It took about 4 hours to migrate everything and teach them the basics, but the local speed for recovery sold me. Has anyone else faced this call for small offices where cloud latency just kills the deal?

Hold on, let me push back on this. The NAS is nice for quick restores, but it does nothing when the office floods or a fire takes out the whole building. @gray_patel nailed it with the restore time concern, but you traded that for a single point of failure sitting on a desk. The USB copy helps, but only if someone remembers to swap the drive and take it home. If that law office is handling client files, losing the physical box means losing everything with no cloud copy to fall back on. For a little extra monthly cost, cloud backup at least gives you a shot at survival after a disaster. The spotty internet hurts, but a NAS plus a cheap cloud tier covers both speed and safety.
