Found out my city spent $340,000 on a study about roundabouts and then ignored it
I was digging through the public budget for Dayton last week and saw a line item for a traffic study that cost $340,000. Turns out they hired a firm to look at 12 intersections and the report said roundabouts would cut crashes by 40%, but the city council voted it down anyway 6 to 1. The guy who voted yes told a local reporter the other members called it a waste of money, which is funny since they paid for the study. Does anyone know how to actually get these reports into a public meeting before they get buried?
My uncle used to sit on a planning board back in the 90s and he said the trick was getting the report put on the agenda as a discussion item, since that forces it into the public record and the minutes. Towns hate that because now there is a paper trail. Might be worth emailing your council member and asking them to read the findings aloud at the next meeting.
