Hot take: I chose a backyard fire pit over a new patio and nearly set my lawn on fire

Last summer I had to pick between pouring a concrete patio for $1,200 or building a $40 fire pit from cinder blocks - I went with the pit, and within two weeks my neighbor called the fire department after a stray ember lit up my dry grass. Has anyone else made a backyard upgrade that backfired worse than mine?

Man I used to be all about those cheap DIY fire pit builds. Thought I was saving money and being smart about it. But after watching my buddy's grass go up in flames just like yours, I started seeing it completely different. A few embers hit the dry spots and suddenly you're spraying the whole thing down with a garden hose while your dog is barking like crazy. Dirt cheap ended up costing way more in stress and near disaster.
