The hidden camera in my Airbnb took 4 months to notice

I stayed at a place in Portland back in March and kept feeling like something was off in the bedroom. It wasn't until July that I spotted a tiny lens in the smoke detector, hidden behind the plastic casing. I had to buy a RF detector online and scan the whole room before I was sure. Turns out it was recording audio too, and the owner claimed it was for "security." Has anyone else dealt with finding hidden devices in rentals and what did you do about it?

File a police report immediately, even if it feels like a hassle, because that creates an official paper trail. Also contact Airbnb support and demand a refund plus compensation for your time and stress dealing with this. Most importantly check if your state has two party consent laws because recording audio without permission could give you grounds for a lawsuit.

Calling the police would be my first move here.
