My uncle told me to always add 15% to the client's initial budget for a kitchen remodel

I ignored him on a $25k job in Tempe last fall and ended up eating $3,700 in unexpected plumbing costs. Anyone have a better rule of thumb for residential estimates?

Ever read about the 10% contingency rule? It's a standard buffer for unknowns in construction projects. That would have covered your plumbing surprise.

I used to skip that buffer too, but @jake_chen is right, a 10% rule would've saved me.
