A misplaced vent pipe in a 1920s house cost me 9 hours and two drywall patches
Last month I was doing a bathroom gut in an old house near Portland and hit a vent pipe that ran right through the middle of where the new vanity was supposed to go. I figured it would take maybe an hour to reroute, so I cut into the wall and found it was tied into two other fixtures, which meant I had to chase it up through the floor and into the attic. The real kicker was the pipe was cast iron and every joint I touched crumbled, so I ended up replacing 14 feet of it with PVC and adding a new AAV just to keep things simple. That one hour job turned into a 9 hour day and two drywall patches I hadn't planned for. My advice is to snake a camera or poke around before you commit to a fixture layout in these old places. Has anyone else gotten burned by hidden vent runs in a remodel, and how do you check for them upfront?
