A reporter called our press release 'a wall of buzzwords' and I rewrote the whole thing
We sent out a release about a new hire and got zero pickup, so I followed up with a guy at the local business journal here in Columbus. He was cool about it and said 'I can't tell what this company actually does until paragraph four.' That one line made me cut our boilerplate from 90 words down to 12 and put the actual news in sentence one. Pickup went from nothing to three stories that week. Curious if anyone else has a rule for how short they keep the opening line.
