Had a chat with our CEO that totally flipped my view on internal newsletters

She told me nobody reads the "CEO Corner" section because it's always the same vague pep talk. She said workers just want to know if the coffee machine is getting fixed and who got promoted in accounting last week. Anyone else find that basic stuff outranks the big vision stuff every time?

That's exactly it. The big vision stuff is for quarterly all hands meetings and maybe the annual letter. People's brains are fried from just getting through the day, they don't have the bandwidth for another abstract mission statement. The coffee machine and the accounting promotion are tangible, they're real things that affect their daily life or that they can actually use. It's like when you're starving and someone hands you a five year plan for the kitchen instead of just a sandwich. I've seen this play out at a few places now where the internal comms team fights for "strategic content" but the engagement numbers always tell a different story. The stuff that actually builds culture is the small, human, fix this thing right now stuff that makes people feel seen and heard.
