I'm split on whether to use a razor comb for texturizing or just stick with shears

At my salon in Austin last Tuesday, a client asked for choppy layers and I grabbed my razor comb, but another stylist told me it causes more split ends than using thinning shears. I feel like razors give a softer finish, but shears seem safer for the hair shaft. Which side do you land on for everyday clients?

You said razors give a "softer finish," but what exactly does that mean for the client a week later when they're styling at home? I've found that razor comb texture gets fuzzy fast if they don't use the right products, while thinning shears hold up better between cuts. Do your everyday clients actually notice the difference in split ends, or is it more of a worry among stylists?

My aunt used a razor for years and her hair looked like straw by fifty.
