The day I figured out I was overconditioning hair for years

I had a client last Tuesday with fine, limp hair who kept asking why her volume disappeared after I worked on her. I brushed it off until she texted me a photo the next day showing her roots flat as a pancake. That's when I realized I was dumping too much moisturizing product on every single head, even when it wasn't needed. Now I scale back based on hair type and porosity, not just what I'm used to doing. Has anyone else had a similar wake-up call with a specific technique?

God, I did the same thing with deep conditioner for way too long, it's such a simple fix that feels obvious once you see it.

Funny how we all convince ourselves we're doing it right when we're really just making a mess... Took me a solid year before someone finally told me I was using way too much and leaving it on way too long. My hair looked great but my drain was screaming for help every single time. Guess that's what happens when you treat hair masks like a science experiment you never read the instructions for.

I swear I did the exact same thing for way too long @grant_cooper, it's almost embarrassing how many years I wasted drowning my hair in heavy conditioners thinking more product equaled better results. You feel like you're treating your hair right but really you're just weighing it down and messing with your natural texture. It took a friend literally grabbing the bottle out of my hand mid-shower to make me realize I was using three times what I actually needed. Now I do the bare minimum based on feel and honestly my hair looks better than it has in ages.
