Client's laptop died mid-warranty call, had to fake a solution

Got a call last week from a guy whose screen went black after a Windows update. I was walking him through safe mode when his battery died and the call dropped. He called back 10 minutes later saying I 'fixed it' because the reboot worked. I told him sure, that was the plan. Ever had a problem just vanish and you take the credit like you meant to do that?

I finally saw the light on PC gaming after a talk with my nephew

My nephew came over last Saturday and booted up his gaming laptop on my living room table. He showed me how he could play a new release at 1440p with high settings while also running Discord and a browser in the background. I've been a console guy since the PS2 days, but watching him swap out a graphics card in 10 minutes without any tools made me realize how locked down I've been. Does anyone else feel like console simplicity comes at the cost of flexibility?

Had a manager who kept scheduling mandatory team building events during our busiest hours

My boss at the warehouse thought a 2 hour trust fall session every Wednesday at 10am was a great idea, even though that was when we processed 80% of the daily shipments. After three weeks of falling behind and getting complaints from clients, I finally snapped and showed him the numbers on how much we were losing per session. Has anyone else dealt with a boss who ignored basic scheduling logic?

Tried freezing leftover chili in ice cube trays for portion control and it backfired hard

I thawed a cube last night and ended up with chili flavored ice water since the bag wasn't sealed tight. How do you guys freeze single servings without turning everything into a frosty mess?

Hit 500 books rebound this week without even noticing

I was cleaning out my workshop yesterday and counted up the spine labels from the last 6 months... came out to exactly 500 books I've rebound. Never thought I'd hit that number, especially since most of them are those beat-up library hardcovers people drop off for repair.

Stuck on the side of I-95 because my 2014 Focus transmission gave out at 60,000 miles

Last summer I was driving from Richmond to visit my sister in Philly. The car started shuddering around exit 98, then just lost all power. Turned out to be the dual clutch actuator. Ford knew about this but didn't call it a recall. I ended up paying $1,200 at a shop near Fredericksburg to get it patched up enough to make it home. Has anyone else dealt with those PowerShift transmissions or found a permanent fix?

My electric bill doubled after a 'smart meter' upgrade from the power company

I live in Austin and back in March they swapped my old meter for a new digital one without telling me, then my bill jumped from $80 to $160 the next month for no reason. When I called to ask about it, the lady on the phone said 'oh yeah, those meters just read more accurately sometimes' like that was supposed to make me feel better. Has anyone else seen their bill go up like this after a meter swap, or did I get a faulty one?

Debate: Are expansions necessary for a board game to be good?

I picked up a base game last week and played it 4 times, but after that it felt like we ran out of strategies. Then my friend brought an expansion and it totally revived the game for me. Do expansions add real value or are they just a money grab to fix a broken game?

Finally stopped using cotton socks on overnight hikes last summer

For years I just wore whatever cheap socks I had around the house on backpacking trips. After a 3 day trip in the Smokies where I got blisters on both heels, a guy at the campground told me to try wool socks. I switched to a pair of lightweight merino wool socks and the difference was night and day. No blisters, no soggy feet, and they didn't smell bad after 3 days. Anyone else make the switch from cotton and never look back?

Had a change of heart about butchering my own cuts after visiting a whole animal place

I used to think breaking down primal cuts at home was just for show. But last month I stopped by this small butcher shop in Portland called Meat People. Watched the guy separate a whole pork shoulder into specific roasts and trim for grind in about 12 minutes. Something about seeing the process up close made me realize it saves money and reduces waste way better than buying pre-packaged stuff. Picked up a half chuck roll and tried it myself the next day. Actually came out cleaner than I expected. Anyone else been converted by a local shop or demo?
