Watched a 2015 phone go from 3 hours battery to 8 hours after a fresh battery swap

I put a new cell in my old LG G4 last weekend and the difference was so crazy (like night and day) that I'm now convinced half my 'old phone is slow' complaints were really just the battery dying, anyone else notice a bigger performance jump from a battery swap than they expected?

Swapping the battery is the best cheap upgrade you can do.

You say it's the best cheap upgrade you can do, but I'm not buying it. A fresh battery might make your phone feel snappier for a week, but the real issue with old phones is the processor and RAM just can't keep up with modern apps. I swapped a battery in a Samsung S6 and it still lagged opening Google Maps, took forever to load web pages, and the camera app would crash halfway through recording. The battery life improved, sure, but the phone's core performance was still trash. You're basically polishing a turd when the chipset is the real bottleneck.
