Took me 3 years to admit I was doing swim drills wrong

Last week I watched a video from a local tri club in Austin where a coach broke down freestyle breathing. I realized I had been lifting my head up instead of rolling to the side for almost 3 years. I went back to the pool the next day and tried it their way, swam 500 yards without getting winded for the first time. Has anyone else had a basic technique fix that made a huge difference way later?

Switched to a high elbow catch after 4 years. Dropped 10 seconds per 100 instantly.

32 years of swimming and I finally tried a high elbow catch last season. Dropping 8 seconds per 100 was enough to make me never go back to a straight arm pull. It feels weird at first but the water pressure under your forearm tells you it's working.
