Old timer showed me a trick with a bucket of water and a string for leveling crane pads on soft ground.

Lost half a shift wrestling with a laser level on muddy site near Mobile three years ago, then this retiree comes over and shows me the old water-and-string method for dead-on level in 10 minutes flat, has anyone else found old-school tricks that beat modern gear?

The real kicker with old school tricks is they usually work BETTER in the specific conditions where modern gear fails. That laser level on a muddy site with reflection and vibration is gonna be a headache every time. Water finds its own level no matter what the ground or weather is like, no batteries needed. Plus you can run that string right through brush or around corners without setting up tripods and targets. Modern tools are great for clean indoor work but out in the dirt the old ways often win hard.
