Union signaller made me redo my lift plan, glad he did

Three months back I was running a 50 ton Grove on a school roof job in Columbus. My signal guy had been on site for two days and I trusted his tags, but the union steward came over and pointed out the load chart showed a 12 foot radius issue I had missed on the south corner. He made me rerig the pick with a shorter bridle and recheck the outrigger pads, took about 40 extra minutes. That afternoon a gust came through that would have swung the load right into the parapet wall on my original setup. I used to think those guys were just paperwork pushers, but now I ask for a second set of eyes on every blind pick. Anyone else had a close call that got fixed by someone who wasn't even running the crane?
