The antagonist prompt that took me 6 hours to crack

Every writing prompt site says make the villain sympathetic. I tried that for a short story and my antagonist just felt like a sad guy with a grudge. Took me 6 hours across three nights to figure out the real issue. The problem wasn't the backstory. It was that I gave him a goal the reader could agree with too easily. Once I made his method worse than his motive, the tension finally landed. Anyone else hit this wall with villain prompts?

Six hours over three nights is a lot of time to spend on one villain prompt, tbh. Making the method worse than the motive sounds like a cool trick but I dont know if its really the secret sauce everyone makes it out to be. Plenty of great villains have methods that match their motives and they still work fine. Seems like the real issue might just be that your first version was boring, not that you cracked some code. Ngl this feels a little overblown for what it is.
