When a writing prompt hands you the whole plot, where's the fun in that?

In my experience, some prompts lay out every detail, like the character's past, the conflict, and even the ending. I tried one last week that described a detective with a specific flaw and a case already solved. It felt like I was just filling in dialogue, not creating anything new. Your mileage may vary, but for me, the joy comes from building the story myself. I get stuck because if I change too much, it's not following the prompt anymore. Take this with a grain of salt, but I think prompts should spark ideas, not dictate them. I've seen others share similar feelings in the community.

A gel pen and a cheap notebook changed EVERYTHING for me, @viola_clark20. Suddenly it was FUN, not homework.
