Honestly that score drop makes total sense. I read somewhere that closing your oldest card can really mess with your credit history length. Tbh it's one of the biggest factors in your score. Your dad probably meant well but that's pretty rough advice. I'd try to reopen it if you can or just keep it open with a tiny charge every few months.
