Had to choose between a free VPN and paying for one last month
I was setting up my home network and needed a VPN for some remote work stuff. My buddy said just grab a free one from the app store but I was worried about data logging or something. Ended up paying $5 a month for a decent one after reading reviews on Reddit for like an hour. So far it's been solid, no slow downs and I feel better about it. Has anyone else had issues with free VPNs leaking info or am I just paranoid?

Yeah that's kind of how everything works now, you pay a little to not get tracked or you get the "free" thing and realize you're the product. It's just like how my friend got all those free music streaming apps and suddenly his phone was full of spam texts.

I read an article in Wired a few months back that broke down exactly how those free apps make money. They sell your data to third parties but also inject tracking SDKs that share your location and browsing habits with like 20 different companies. That's probably how your friend's phone got hit with spam, those sketchy streaming apps share everything with ad networks that have zero security.
