Tried both sand and cat litter for icy steps this morning. Sand won by a mile.
We got a dusting of ice overnight and my front steps were like a skating rink. I had a bag of cheap clay cat litter in the garage and a bag of play sand from last summer. Put the cat litter down on the left side and the sand on the right. The cat litter just turned into a slippery slushy mess after one person walked on it. The sand gave actual grip all morning and I didn't have to reapply. Has anyone else found a better cheap option than sand for ice?

... I've tried sand too and it works good but you gotta be careful if you have concrete steps. Sand can scratch up the surface over time if you're using it a lot. I also heard some people mix it with a little bit of salt to help melt the ice underneath... that's what I started doing and it lasts even longer without needing to reapply.

Oh yeah I read somewhere that mixing sand with calcium chloride works even better than regular salt since it kicks off the melting faster. Might be worth a shot if you want to avoid scratching the concrete up.
