The "deal" on bulk paper towels wasn't a deal at all

Yesterday I realized I've been getting tricked by bulk pricing for like 2 years. I bought a 12-pack of paper towels at Costco for $18 thinking I was saving big. Then I did the math on the per-roll price compared to the 6-pack at Target. The Target ones were actually cheaper per roll by about 30 cents even without a coupon. Now I check the unit price on everything before I buy. Anyone else catch themselves assuming bulk always equals better value?

Read a piece in Consumer Reports a while back that said the same thing. They found you gotta check the unit price every time because stores know folks think bigger is always cheaper.

Bigger packages also tend to sit on shelves LONGER so you might end up throwing half of it away anyway. Stores love seeing a 10-pound bag of something but they know most households can't actually use it before it goes bad. That "savings" is really just you paying for trash day.
