Why does nobody talk about how bad cheap power adapters are for laptop batteries

I used to just grab any $15 universal charger off Amazon for my laptop. Then last month my battery went from lasting 5 hours to barely 1 hour after just 6 months. A guy at the local repair shop on 4th Street told me the voltage spikes from those cheap adapters slowly kill the cells. Has anyone else wrecked a battery this way before they realized?

The guy at the repair shop mentioned voltage spikes, but did he say anything about the current rating being off too? I mean most of those cheap adapters brag about "universal compatibility" but they just throw random numbers at the wall. Thinking back on it, my old adapter would get hot enough to fry an egg on, that's probably a bad sign right there.

That "hot enough to fry an egg" bit really hits home, @rosel83.

Heat is actually more about the adapter struggling than current rating being wrong.
