Bought a $30 air fryer at a garage sale and it burned my toast three times before I figured it out

I figured if I just set it to 400 degrees for 2 minutes it'd be fine, but it came out like charcoal every time. What's the secret with these things anyway?

...so I had this same problem with my first air fryer, ended up accidentally smoking out the whole kitchen at 2am trying to make frozen waffles. Turns out you gotta shake the basket halfway through or the heat just sits in one spot, and 2 minutes is way too long for most things unless you want hockey pucks. Also learned the hard way that toast in an air fryer needs like 30 seconds at 350, not 400, or it goes from golden to cremated real fast.

The 30 seconds at 350 for toast is REAL. I set off my smoke detector TWICE before I figured that out. Also pro tip: spray a LITTLE oil on frozen stuff or it sticks to the basket like glue.
