My district manager caught me reading a textbook on my lunch break yesterday
I work retail at a mall in Phoenix and I'm trying to study for my IT certification between customers. She told me if I have time to lean I have time to stock shelves, even on unpaid break. Anyone else get hassled for trying to better yourself at a dead end job?

True that @patricia42, they expect us to stay stuck and quiet about it.

Started studying in the break room with my phone and earbuds so nobody could tell what I was doing. Got my A+ cert that way while working at a grocery store. Just tucked my phone in my apron pocket and listened to training videos on my breaks without making a big show of it. The less they notice what you're up to, the easier it is to keep moving forward.

Yeah exactly what @grant_cooper is saying, the key is keeping it low key so nobody starts asking questions or giving you a hard time. I used to do the same thing with plumbing code books on my lunch break, just had them tucked in my truck under the seat so nobody saw me studying. People respect the hustle more when they see the results later instead of watching you try to get there.
