My new drawing tablet came with a free trial of a weird brush pack
I got a Huion Kamvas 13 last month and it had a code for some 'experimental' brushes. I tried one that was supposed to make watercolor blooms... but it just made this weird, muddy pixel mess on every layer. I spent like three hours thinking it was my fault before I checked the artist's notes. Turns out the brush only works right on a specific, super old canvas setting in the program. Has anyone else run into brushes that need really specific setups to not look terrible?

My friend Sam downloaded a free brush set that promised perfect cloud textures. It needed the blend mode set to "divide" on a bright orange background layer to look right, which was buried in a readme file from 2012. She wasted a whole afternoon on gray smudges before finding it.

Actually that readme file is doing her a favor. Free brushes are a gift, not a product with a warranty. The maker took time to build those brushes and shared them for nothing. It's on the user to read the instructions, even if they're old. Expecting everything to work right out of the download is a bit entitled. A little problem solving is part of using any free tool.
