My $200 mistake with a 'global' mobile hotspot

I bought a Skyroam Solis Lite for about $200 before a trip to Mexico City, thinking it would solve my internet issues. The first day, it worked fine in my hotel, but the speed dropped to almost nothing when I tried to work from a cafe. I checked the plan and found out the 'unlimited' data was actually capped at a very low speed after the first gigabyte. Has anyone found a better way to get solid internet without these hidden limits?

That one gigabyte limit is pretty standard for travel hotspots though, right?
