Pro tip: I just finished a deck and the difference between using a chalk line versus just eyeballing it was huge.

I built a 12x16 foot deck last month and tried to just mark the joist layout by eye with a pencil, but everything was off by almost half an inch. I finally bought a $15 chalk line from the hardware store and the second attempt was perfectly straight and square. Has anyone else found one simple tool that totally changed a project for them?

Oh man, I feel this so hard. I was putting up some shelving and my "eyeballed" level lines were a total joke, everything slanted. Borrowed a laser level from a neighbor and it was like magic, everything just snapped into place perfectly straight. That one tool completely changed my confidence for hanging anything on a wall now. It's wild how the right simple gear can save you from so much frustration.

Wait, you were just eyeballing level lines for shelves? That's some next level confidence (or chaos, honestly). I can't even hang a picture without checking it six times with a bubble level. My brain would short circuit trying to guess if a whole shelf was straight. The laser level sounds like a total game changer though.

The whole "next level confidence (or chaos)" bit got me because that's basically my approach to life. I once tried to hang a heavy mirror by just eyeballing the center of the wall and now there's a sad little hole I had to patch. The chalk line thing really clicked for me too though, I used one for laying out some paver stones and suddenly my patio didn't look like it was designed by a drunk person. It's funny how the simplest stuff saves you from looking like you have no idea what you're doing.
